The Face Care Ritual
Four steps, morning and evening — the daily foundation everything else rests on.
Four steps, morning and evening. Not because four is a magic number, but because each one prepares the skin for the next, and the last one keeps all of it in place.
This is the ritual that does most of the work over a life. It asks for five minutes and gives back the kind of result that only ever comes from repetition — which is to say, the kind worth having.

Step One
Cleanse
Every other step depends on this one. A cleanser lifts the day off the skin — sunscreen, city air, the oils the skin made itself — without stripping the barrier that holds moisture in. Skin should feel clean afterwards, never tight.
How — damp skin, a small amount, thirty unhurried seconds, lukewarm water. On days that held makeup or sunscreen, take an oil or balm first and follow it with the gel; the oil dissolves what water cannot, the gel clears what the oil leaves behind.

Step Two
Tone
The quiet step, and the one most often skipped. A toner settles the skin’s pH after cleansing and leaves the surface damp — which is precisely the state in which everything applied next absorbs best. Think of it less as a product than as preparation.
How — press it into the skin with your palms rather than dragging it across with cotton, and move on while the skin is still damp.

Step Three
Serum
Where the actives live. A serum carries a high concentration of what skin actually needs in a light base that absorbs quickly, applied after toner and before cream so that nothing stands in its way. This is the step that changes things — kept daily, rather than intensely and occasionally.
How — three or four drops, warmed between the fingertips, pressed into the face and neck. Give it a moment to settle before the cream.

Step Four
Cream
The seal. A cream is the richest thing in the ritual and comes last for exactly that reason: it slows the water leaving the skin and keeps everything beneath it where it was put. Applied to skin still slightly damp from the steps before, it does twice the work.
How — a small amount, warmed, smoothed upward and outward. In the morning, sunscreen goes over it — the one step that protects everything the other four are for.
Five minutes kept every evening will always outperform forty minutes kept twice. If a step has to go on a tired night, keep the cleanse and the cream; those two alone are a complete, honest ritual.
